    Its similar to Zelda 2 or Friday the 13th , they tried to do too much for the system and relied on the manual and knowledge of the game to play it. A simpler pick and play style for just works better for a first impression in older games.

      There are very good points on Zelda 2 and Friday the 13th Both of these we rented for the weekend and of course you never got the manuals when you rented the games. Friday the 13th my brother and I figured some of it out and Zelda 2 took quite the hot minute to get our bearings as well. Without the manuals the all these games seem almost inpossible

    1:36 - Look at the new enhanced Berzerk that the current iteration of Atari is selling. It does have voices "The humanoid must not escape", and it's been updated to fire diagonally. It looks identical to the OG 2600 Berzerk, but is a very good improvement.

    • @TheDI
      @TheDI 15 днів тому

      Thanks for pointing out the new addition to Berzerk It's pretty cool that Atari is re-releasing these with enhanced features that they could not do originally but with advancementd in chip capacity and technology they can finally do things like add the voices and such.

    Great video. I had no idea about last game you mentioned so I will try to pick that one up. I used to love Pinball machines and this place that had many arcade machines when I was a kid had upward of 30 machines and when I went back they had gotten rid of most of them and maybe 3 were left. So sad.

      Thanks! Bumper bash I think was a Canadian Atari game with a limited release it maybe very hard to find Arcades anymore are not what they used to be. Most newer arcades are just ticket redemption type of phone app games. I'm not saying they are bad but it misses some the of majesty the 70, 80's and 90's arcade games. There was a really cool Arcade at Indiana Beach but the last time I was there almost all the old games were gone. It was very sad as well. One of my bucket list items is to go to The Galloping Ghost Arcade in Chicago you pay for entry and everything is on free play

    Oh man...I played pinball at my town's pizza joints well before there were widespread video games; I do own Video Pinball and Midnight Magic (which I had played a version of for the C64 called David's Midnight Magic), but never heard of Bumper Bash before I saw this video...I will have to keep an eye out for that, thanks. But interestingly, I also have an Atari console that came out in late 1977 called Video Pinball. This was a dedicated console that had two versions of pinball that had flippers that looks like big logs :); but it also had two buttons, one on each side that was meant to simulate flipper buttons. It also had a couple of basketball variants, as well as a version of Breakout, which is why the unit also had a spinner controller on top. Surprisingly fun.

    • @TheDI
      @TheDI 3 місяці тому

      I did see some photos of the Video Pinball you are talking about it's a pretty cool unit and to think it was the forerunner of all those plug and play games. We didn't have any pinball games at any of the local places but they did have a US Marshal Mechanical shooting game my brother and I played at the laundromat all the time. As far as I can tell Bumper Bash was a Canadian Atari game and it maybe very rare to find a copy. I had a C64 but I didn't have David's Midnight Magic and that is a shame as well

    Used this allllll the time. Customized it with new jpgs. Kept an old machine around forever just to be an extra screen with Cthugha on it. As we all moved to WinAmp and lots of visualizers came out, all felt like Cthugha was always more responsive and “in tune” with the music. Like it also cared about color and speed. While most new things focused on waveform representation rather than the values of the frequencies being used first other data. Thaks a million Zaph!

    • @TheDI
      @TheDI 3 місяці тому

      Cthugha was a great comfort during my long study hours at college. Later in life I used a similar software in windows it think it was the Psychedelic Screen Saver but for the life of me I cant remember for sure. I used to run it for a local heavy metal band piping it out from the TV out on my video card and used an old VCR to pump the signal to several old TV sets I had all over the stage including 2 large projection TV's they used as the backdrop. I ran a microphone to one of the speakers and used the audio to drive the visuals. It was one of my favorite things to do and everyone loved it. When they took a break for the set I ran multiple ads on the screen that also got visualized for their Website I ran and CDs for sale and their next gigs, etc. It seemed pretty forerunning to stuff that is now common place at gig's and concerts. The bar owner decided to start doing the same thing and added their own ads to the big TV's as well. It was pretty good times back in the day. I did the visuals for this and also with the use of my first Digital camera I also use to do live wedding slideshows using Play Inc's Gizmo's 98 slideshow software the forerunner to Proshow Gold to make an on the fly video presentation I got to see a live presentation of Gismo's 98 at Comdex in Chicago and it was presented by non other than Kiki Stockhammer I scanned the bride and groom's pics of growing up and then I took photos during the ceremony and added them to the slideshow for the reception. everyone was flabbergasted how I was able to do it but with the new tech it was becoming very easy to do these things and again its now commonplace Funny how many of these things we grew up with have become incorporated in everything that is used today

    Pinball is actually making a comeback and there are new companies making pinball games. I ama place near me that has tons of pinball games and some arcade games. You pay a set fee to get in for an hour and everything (except the charity pinball games in the front) are on free play. Just recently played Baby Pacman, the arcade game/pinball game combo.

    • @TheDI
      @TheDI 4 місяці тому

      I was fortunate enough to have played a Baby Pacman arcade sometime back. It's a pretty bold hybrid of a pinball/Arcade game especially for how old it is. The pinball game Safecracker was similar to Baby Pacman in the aspect that once you broke inside the bank you then played a "board game" on the backglass to try and get into the vault. it was one of my favorites the late 90's ~00's. I went to a similar place in Columbus, OH called Level One Bar & Arcade. All the arcades was set on free play or had a button to add quarters and all the pinball machines was .25 to play. One of the things on my bucket list is visiting Galloping Ghost Arcade in Brookfield, IL. The Arcade is $25 to enter and play all day with almost 900 arcade games on free play including a few prototype arcade games such as Primal Rage II.

      @TheDI 4 місяці тому

      Yes, you are correct on this. In my defense I really didn't script this video I did it off the cuff as I said at the start of the video and I was trying to remember everything from when I played all these games as a kid since I really hadn't done it since the mid 80's. I was trying to rack my brain while talking and I think Atlantis 2 popped in there instead of Cosmic Ark. I also messed up on maze craze as well. I said the cops were running around the maze instead of the robbers :(

      It was something else for it's time. There was a Chicagoland area BBS that had a RIP front end and I download RIPTerm to use it and it took forever to download and cache the sound effects and the image files. The main menu was a graveyard and flashes of lightning would crack in the background and play a thunderclap sound effect. All the tombstones were different menus for the board. I only had a 14.4 modem and it took a long time to do anything on the ripboard so I abandoned it and went back the Ansi.

    This is the first time I’ve heard a UA-cam channel mention that ET boots up on the most difficult setting. I’ve been arguing forever that this is why the game got a bad reputation

    • @TheDI
      @TheDI 4 місяці тому

      I was mostly right about that statement. I forgot that the A-B difficulty switch meant (A)dvanced and (B)eginner instead of A being standard and B being Harder. But the rest was dead on. Game 1 was whole hog, Game 2 was FBI and Elliott only and Game 3 was Elliott only. So unlike Adventure where Game 1 was the easiest ET started out with the hardest. I think the logic was that they wanted you to have the "Full" ET experience . I have always said that ET was not as bad as everyone made it out. Yes the pit pixel perfect collision could get annoying but the game was different every time you played. That in it's self was gold to me that I didn't have the game memorized and could beat in in 4 mins like I could in Game 1 of Adventure. Many of the comments left on this video pretty much are in support of ET not being a bad game. Some people state they still don't like the game but that facts about it's short development time and such gave them different view about the game. And then there are the people that no matter what is said they hate it into the ground. That is fine with me because we are not all alike and that is what makes us human.

    There are Atari compatible joysticks such as the Hyperkin Trooper 2 that have 2 fire buttons. With the Stella emulator you can set the left button to the left paddle paddle button and ditto for the right. Works great for Bumper Bash. The Hyperkin Trooper 2 also has 4 more buttons. 2 on the front and 2 on the back. Set the left and right top buttons for stick left/right and one of the front buttons to fire and you're set to go with Video Pinball and Midnight Magic. Or, with a utility such as Joy2Key you can leave the Stella settings mostly default and set up profiles for each of the pinball games. For bumper you will need to assign 2 keyboard keys to the paddle buttons for Joy2Key to trigger. ( I used O & P ) and map the front left button to Fire. This works for Midnight but for Video Pinball you will need to disable the default fire button.

    Funny. I saw my posts there in Atari age when you were scrolling where I originally asked if someone could do that hack, then nukey did it.

      It was a great find indeed. It was so awesome to play it with the paddles and I easily increased my score. Another poster @jeremiahthomas8140 said Nukey Shay had passed away.

    Nice overview of the 2600 pinball games. Have you ever covered the dedicated Atari Video Pinball console? RIP to Nukey Shay, he did a lot for the Atari community.

    This was my favorite door game on BBS (Trade Wars was too complicated, and you'd always get flattened by a more experienced player and have to start over). I just wish there was a good way to emulate it on my current computer to play it occasionally, out of nostalgia. I suppose I should just learn to build my own.

      @@TheDIRunning it dosbox sounds convenient. I used dosbox to run the control.exe for Pit 3.6 when I was trying to set it up a local synchronet BBS... but I didn't get the configuration right (even following the Synchronet instructions). Based on your comment, I also tried running the pit.exe directly with d-fend reloaded, adding a dorinfo1.def file type from Synchronet's example docs, placed in the game directory, but no dice there either. I'm just really fuzzy on what the pit.exe requires to run.

    Well, I guess this is the only video on YT about Cthugha that isn't about some anime. I used it back in the day. I don't remember the JPG functionality nor seeing that guy but it's nice to know. I probably still have the software somewhere in diskettes.

    We had a ridiculous amount of 2600 games. I can't even begin to remember them all. A lot of stand outs are on this list. One of the biggest standouts I didn't see is Keystone Kapers. That was with out a doubt one of the best on the system IMO! River Raid was definitely up there. We had Frog Bog on Intellivision rather than the 2600, which was endless hours of fun. Frogger was ok but we always though Freeway was far better. Same concept but chickens crossing the road. E.T. was perhaps the most confusing and pointless of all the games to play because we never got anywhere but for that reason we used to play the heck out of it. Wasting hours just trying to figure it out. Same for Raiders. They were just so unusual and ,seemingly at least, more complex than any other games of the time.

    The graphics were not important as good gameplay. If the game sucked graphics made no difference. Most games today are all graphics but no substance. Then games like Fallout that are fan favorites get pushed aside for almost 2 decades and gimmicky multiplayer version is pushed that wasnt the sa e formula as the success of yesterday

      @@TheDI I've only played Video Pinball. I was just looking at adding Midnight Magic to the collection CIB. This off-topic from pinball, but you mentioned your dad's 286 PC. I had an IBM PS2 50Z with the 286 chip and I was still using it in engineering school around 1992 (I skipped the 386 era). We had to write code from scratch in a fluid dynamics course to model fluid flow and performance of nozzle. The program took over 23 hours to run on the 286. I happened to get a Zeos 486 via mail order, and the code ran in less than 17 minutes! All of my friends wanted to borrow my PC.

      Never got the chance to play Demon Attack back in the day but it is a pretty great game. Defender was a pretty good port of the arcade on the 2600
